The Kompanions secured the captive Lord Willem and began looting the corpses of his fallen men. Stilgar, the Chaos Monk, picked up Willem’s sword which proved to be a bad idea. A weapon forged by the powers of Law, it took umbrage to the unclean touch of the monk and sent a gout of blue flame up its hilt. The monk fell low, horribly burned and permanently scarred. The prosthetic hand Stilgar wears on his left arm is a potent artifact that provides healing to its wearer and he was soon mending again. The companions carefully gathered the rest of their looted goods, animated some new zombies to refill the ranks and headed back to the temple. The town of Woodhurst was ominously deserted as they passed through. Stilgar had threatened the druid’s with its destruction and the residents took him at his word. The Kompanions were in a hurry so they left Woodhurst for another day. The party rested for a few days and considered their next move.
The ever crafty Stilgar formulated a plan to use Akbar’s magic to impersonate Willem and lure the officers of Willem’s army to a meeting so they could be waylaid and slain. Most of the party headed toward Silverside. Pompous and their henchman Einarr flew the captive Willem on the roc back to Vanessa’s Lament. Kalador stayed at the temple with the zombie army. Rexor, Stilgar and Akbar along with a small contingent of their heavy cavalry dressed in Willem’s livery rode toward Silverside with murder on their minds.
After several days of riding, the Kompanions were nearly to Silverside when they noticed the roc flying swiftly in a direct line toward them. Finding a place to meet it out of direct view of the city, the party learned that Einarr had come as fast as he could to tell them that Vanessa’s Lament was besieged by Willem’s army. The party used its magic to pierce an illusion of Willem’s army encamped on the banks of the Silver River. They were a day and half by roc from Vanessa’s Lament and had already taken serious losses in the assault on their keep!
Stilgar, Rexor and Akbar climbed aboard the roc with instruction to their cavalry to return to the Temple of Chaos and flew as fast as they could. Arriving just before dark a day and half later, the Kompanions observed catapults, massed infantry troops just out of archery range of their walls and cavalry raiders pillaging and destroying the farms for miles around the Kompanion’s keep. Lavinia had used her magic to arrive at the keep before the party and was aware of their presence when they arrived. Flying through a hail of arrows, the roc flew the party in close enough for Akbar to drop a fireball onto Lavinia’s position as Rexor and Stilgar flew in to engage her. Akbar continued to make these strafing runs and destroy the catapults as his friends slew the sorceress. Before her demise she did considerable damage to Rexor with a potent magic missile spell. Her bodyguard attempted to avenge their erstwhile mistress but fell at the feet of Rexor.
The officers of Willem’s army rushed to the attack, hoping to destroy the Kompanions and free their leige lord but it was not to be. Akbar ringed his friends with a wall of fire as they cut down the soldiers who rushed to surround the pair. The brave officers lept through the flames to attack the worthies of Chaos. They fought well and with courage but they were no match for the strength of Rexor and the black monk. The rest of Willem’s men were not yet ready to quit the field though their hearts wavered.
Covered in the gore of his enemies, Rexor stalked through the flames. A horrible sight for the men at arms to behold. A massive man, with four arms, the wings of a giant beetle and encased in a demonic exoskeleton resembling that of a warrior ant. He waded into their ranks, heedless of their feeble attempts to pierce his flesh. Laughing with the joy of battle, Rexor slew all who came before him. Stilgar followed after, killing men with a single blow of his mighty fists. The slaughter was too much for the morale of the men who faced this doom. The will of the soldiers about Stilgar and Rexor was broken and they fled in terror.
Pompous seeing the opportunity, rallied the remaining troops of Vanessa’s Lament and charged forth as Akbar retired back to the keep. The roc had been flying through clouds of arrows and was nearly finished. The Kompanions pursued Willem’s army slaying and capturing his soldiers. They chased the escaping army until they were exhausted and returned to Vanessa’s Lament with their prisoners and the booty from the wagon train.
