Into the Deep: Game Report #15

Stilgar the Red Monk, Rexor the mutated fighter and Akbar wielder of the Shadow Staff descended into the Undercity of Nightside from their private entrance in the cellar of their villa. They purchased the manse because it has a direct connection to an entrance known as “The Shaft.” The Shaft was reportedly dug by the Slaadi who had investigated the great block of stone floating through Limbo with no known Power having created or maintaining it. The Slaad eventually abandoned the stone. The abandoned slaves of the Slaad and other explorers built the city upon the rocky surface. For generations, adventurers and travelers have delved deeper into the mysteries of this strange safe zone in the swirling endless Chaos of Limbo.

The Shaft, is the garbage dump of Nightside and the central hub from which nearly all other parts of the undercity can be reached. It goes directly to the deepest mapped levels of the dungeons. That was where the Kompanions and their henchman Einar the Reluctant were headed. The air grew more damp and foul as they descended using the giant beetle wings of Rexor, Stilgar’s monk abilities, and a fly spell for Akbar. Nothing molested the four until they reached the bottom of the shaft. There they found a room full of a great pile of trash and filth accumulated from the city itself and the dwellers of the dungeons below. There a great otyugh was wallowing through the cess pit. Five massive flies with tentacles growing out of their disgusting heads were also feeding on the filth. Disturbed by the new arrivals and enticed by the potential meal of fresh meat, the vile creatures attacked the Kompanions. Though there were some difficulties, the party managed to overcome their attackers.

They noticed the corpse of a strange humanoid creature of roughly the size of a human. It had the head of hairless giant rabbit with floppy ears. It’s body was covered in weeping pustules and sores and it had clearly been bitten by some sort of insect. The body was squishy like a balloon filled with pudding but Rexor decided to inspect it anyway, hoping to find some treasure or indication of its origins. A number of rot grubs were infesting the flesh of the creature and attempted to infest the mighty warrior. He burned out the attacking parasites and decided to leave the corpse to rot in the prodigious accumulation of rubbish.

Moving on, the party came across an area controlled by the diseased rabbit men. Utilizing his amazing monk abilities and crying out with his battle cry, “PARKOUR,” Stilger leapt over a barrier and punched a sleeping guard as the other followed him into battle. Soon, the entire warren of rabbitmen were upon them but were no match for the mighty Kompanions of Kalador. As the party was searching the lair amidst the stinking corpses of their foes, a poxy old hag materialized out in the room demanding compensation for the slaying of her servants. The party scoffed and attacked the old lady who was tougher than she seemed but not strong enough to withstand the power of the Kompanions.

The party traveled a long hall that led to an area of smaller rooms. In each room there was a collection of household goods stacked up. One had ceramics, another leather goods a third was a collection of amphora and so on. The party searched through these and grabbed some of the most valuable and useful of the items. As they searched two more of the hags materialized and attacked. Though the denizens of the abyss put up a fight, the Kompanions prevailed again.

Wanting to go back to a larger room they had not investigated the party returned to the main hallway. Peering into the room and using one of Rexor’s mechanical spider constructs to reconnoiter they noticed there were three large pillars that were placed in strange points in the room. If they were structural, the miners must have been mad as they were all in the wrong spots. It turned out that the pillars were monsters waiting for passing prey, camouflaged as pillars. Though uncertain of what could be gained by the effort, the party attacked. Using their powerful tentacles which could reach out and grab prey fifty feet away the monsters battered the party. Though one of the fierce beasts was felled, the Kompanions decided it would be wise to retreat back to hallway and call it a day.

On their way back to The Shaft, the party was waylaid by a very large slug like creature covered with large buboes. As they cut at it, the buboes were pierced and the Kompanions were sprayed with a disgusting pus. Their strong constitutions prevented them from picking up some horrible dungeon disease though they no longer had an appetite as they dispatched the monstrous slug. They managed to escape the dungeon and return back to their villa to clean up, recover and plan their next forray into the deep.

We’d had some difficulty getting a game going the last few weeks so it was good to get back together. We’ve been playing over Skype. For what we are doing, it seems to work out well. I’ve considered using Roll20 or some other virtual table top but there is certainly a lot more work involved in doing that.
