Discomfort is Good

Some of my best game sessions as a game master have come when I was not at all sure about the outcome. I had an idea, I assembled it and presented it to the players in whatever form it seemed most appropriate. The results have been varied but often the response from players is very positive. Its because when I do that, I’m stepping into not sure if what I’m offering is going to work. I’m uncomfortable. I’m doing something I haven’t done before, something I haven’t seen before, something that might be challenging to the players in a way that will make them either very unhappy or very pumped up because they overcame a difficult challenge, something that will give them nightmares, something that is silly, something weird.

If you are comfortable with the material that you are presenting at the table, that’s OK. It is fun to be relaxed and feel good about what you are throwing down.

If you want to expand your possibilities as a game master, you have to be outside of the space you feel good and go into that place where you feel a little anxiety and try on something difficult.
