One of the great things about the internet is that I’ve learned about music genres that are niche and very interesting. Back in the olden days… we had to go to the music store and get recommendations from the clerk, hear something new on a mix tape a friend made or read about it in a magazine. I miss those days in some sense. The face to face interaction with people in the shop or at a club was really great. On the other hand, there is so much great music available at your finger tips that you can go down a rabbit hole of things you’ve never heard before for hours on end.
One of my favorites right now is dark ambient. If you do a search on YouTube or Spotify you can find some great “projects” as they call them in the scene. We are fortunate here in Cleveland that there is a monthly gathering of noise and ambient music called Noise Lunch. It’s a cool event that happens on the first Sunday of the month at Now That’s Class. I’ve gone a few times and it’s a great time.
My favorite label so far has been Cryo Chamber. They did a series of collaborations between the artists around the theme of Lovecraft’s Old Ones. Each of the Old Ones gets their own hour of weird soundscapes. Great background music for games, if you into that. I usually have it on in the background when I’m writing or prepping for a game. Check them out!
