There are some games which have the stated design intent of creating “satisfying narratives.” This outcome is unlikely. Why is that?
Intentionally creating good stories is hard. People spend decades of their lives devolping this skill. People spend thousands of hours writing, workshopping and taking classes to develop the skill of creating a single well crafted story. Not only that, they still fuck it up from time to time, even after they are considered competant practitioners of the craft.
The probability of a game designer figuring out a set of mechanisms that can reliably result in a something you might call a satisfying narrative when skilled professionals have to struggle for months and years to do the same is rather improbable.
I have played several of these types of games and several times with well known and popular game designers demonstrating their games. I did not enjoy them very much. I tried. I wanted to. They just aren’t for me.
