RIP Gene Wolfe

Gene Wolfe passed this week. His most well known work, The Book of The New Sun has had a impact on how I think about fiction and gaming. An important lesson I learned is that fiction doesn’t have to be “fun.” It’s a challenging work to read and take in. In decades to come, academics will study and dissect and discuss it the same way they have Tolkien’s writing.

Wolfe showed his readers a great deal of respect. He said, “You’re smart. Here. Figure this one out.” He did that in the early 80’s. The publishing houses in those days were churning out a lot of easy to read and entertaining work but very little of it was challenging to the reader. The Book of the New Sun was one of the exceptions to that.

I am glad that we had him here with us for a while and that he left some great literary puzzles for us to ponder.
